Reflection

Looking back on this project and its research over the past few weeks, I now understand that not everyone fighting in WW2 were on the frontlines. There were Medical Battalions who helped rescue injured soldiers in times of need instead of fighting with them. They sacrificed themselves to save others who were hurt, not just to help the fight for freedom. If I had the ability to talk to Emmet Cramer I would tell him that his efforts with the 261st Medical Battalion showcased his selflessness to help others instead of himself. I would like to ask him what he liked about being in the Medical Battalion, and if he had any interesting stories to tell of his time there. The most important source I gained while researching was Cramer's Report of Induction and Physical Examination documents, they contained lots of information about his personal life and his relations before he enlisted. This project as a whole helped to redefine gratitude for me as it shows that not everyone who participated in the war was fighting head on, they were helping to save the lives of many soldiers so they could come back home when it was all over. Not everyone gets the chance to survive a life threating event after all, and Cramer was no exception.
